The start of a new year often fills us with ambition and we declare that this year, YES THIS YEAR, we will stick to our resolutions! “I’ll just flip this little Willpower switch here and be good to go!!” [cue overconfident smile and swagger]
Yet, as January progresses—right around the third week, in fact—the Willpower circuit starts to short out. The indoor trainer and the new, uber healthy menu begin to feel like a punishment or at least not nearly as enjoyable as watching Netflix while spooning Haagen Dazs ice cream. If this sounds familiar, it’s ok! You can Regroup, Reset and Restart.
Instead of pushing yourself to stick to a resolution, consider: Are you truly inspired by your goal? Often, resolutions fail because we tell ourselves we “should” lose weight, “should” save more money, or “should” learn a new skill. But “should” rarely lasts long.
What if you choose a goal that pulls you forward? A goal that’s worth pursuing even on days when you feel like curling up on the couch for an epic nap and avoiding all the things you said you’d do.
Having a worthy goal changes everything. As Alumni Jason Cameron said of having BC Bike Race as a goal in our Tales from the Trails blog last spring:
“Looking forward to [BCBR] keeps me motivated to train and ride more than I would without the event looming, and I find myself happier the more training and exercise I fit into my life.
Maybe that’s the magic of BCBR. If you’re focused on it, you have to ride your bike.
If you like riding your bike, you’ll love BCBR.
If you sign up for BCBR, you’ll ride your bike more.
If you ride your bike more, you’ll be happier for it.”
Remember, the journey is not about perfection. It’s about progress. Every small step counts. And when you’re led by a worthy goal, even setbacks become part of a meaningful story.
This year, let inspiration guide you. Find a goal that doesn’t just challenge you, but excites you. The difference is transformative.
If you think the BC Bike Race, is a goal you want in your riding calendar, register for our “Regroup, Reset and Restart” Zoom call Thursday, January 30 at 12pm Pacific. We’ll talk about the supports we have in place to keep you on track, answer your questions and help you decide if 2025 is the year that BCBR becomes YOUR worthy goal.
